THE BUTTERFLY STUDIO JOURNEY
Butterfly Studio was created to address the far-reaching effects of the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009 on the community of Christmas Hills and its neighbours. Its role continues today, both in a community engagement capacity, and as a thriving community art studio.
The studio has significantly contributed to the recovery of both its own community and other bushfire-affected communities and has been supported in this by local, state and federal government bodies as well as many community organisations within the Shires of Nillumbik and Yarra Ranges.
Since 2010, Butterfly Studio has run, coordinated, facilitated, or contributed to over 750 workshops, projects, programs and events. Over 10,000 people have engaged with the studio to date.
OUR MISSION
Butterfly Studio aims to connect people to both their natural environment and each other through Art. Through its programs and activities, which are both arts-based and health and wellbeing focussed, Butterfly Studio supports both the journey of a community and the personal journeys of its people.
The studio strongly advocates that Art in its many forms is not only cross cultural, cross generational and non-gender specific, but is also a powerful conduit for community strengthening and recovery.
THE STUDIO
Butterfly Studio is a not-for-profit incorporated association. The studio is coordinated by a team of professional artists, art therapists, and creative professionals with specialist skills in project management, community art and community and cultural development. Our experienced arts program facilitators work alongside practising artists and community members to deliver a wide range of programs and projects.
Christmas Hills is home to many vibrant and thriving artists, all of whom are inspired by the beauty of the natural environment in which they live. Our purpose-built studio, located within the grounds of the refurbished Christmas Hills Mechanics Institute Hall, is gifted with beautiful views and is nestled within a natural bush setting.
